Police reports reflect the information available to law enforcement and the direction of its investigation. Defense investigation asks different questions: Who was not interviewed? Does the timeline work? What does the scene show? Which statement can be independently corroborated?
Roberts Investigative Services works with defense counsel to develop those facts. We do not decide guilt or innocence, provide legal advice or promise that an investigation will uncover exculpatory evidence.
What a Defense Investigator Does
- Witness location and interviews — finding witnesses, documenting their accounts and identifying details that need corroboration.
- Report and discovery review — comparing reports, statements, video and records for gaps or inconsistencies that warrant follow-up.
- Timeline and scene work — testing travel times, sight lines, lighting, access and other physical details against the stated sequence of events.
- Evidence development — locating available records, photographs, video or other lawful sources relevant to counsel's theory of the case.
- Mitigation investigation — documenting a client's history, circumstances and support network for sentencing or disposition.
- Specialist coordination — helping counsel identify when forensic, medical, digital or other expert analysis is needed.
How the Work Fits the Legal Team
Counsel sets the legal strategy. The investigator develops facts, preserves source information and reports findings—including facts that do not support the initial theory. That independence is what makes the work useful.
For eligible court-appointed matters, investigative services may be funded through Florida's Justice Administrative Commission. Private clients should speak with defense counsel first when charges are pending.
