Court-appointed counsel may request investigative funding through Florida's Justice Administrative Commission. Counsel controls the request and the investigative scope.
What the Justice Administrative Commission Does
The Justice Administrative Commission administers funding and payment for specified court-appointed legal services in Florida, including approved investigative expenses in eligible cases. It does not hire a private investigator for a defendant directly.
What is the JAC?
Court-appointed counsel identifies the investigative need, follows the applicable approval process and instructs the investigator. Eligibility, rates, authorization and documentation are governed by current JAC rules and the appointing court.
